The Elephant Man - Review

Fig One - Poster

Fig Two - John Merrick

The elephant man film (1980) was directed by David Lynch and is very much a sad and wonderful film to watch.

John Merrick life since birth was always hard for him as his body is servilely disfigured from and attack on his mum by an elephant while is was in her womb.  The way he looked clearly wasn’t accepted in that time which is shown in the film by the reaction to him from the public which Is sad to thing how humans can treat other human badly because they look different.

The film is based on a true story of a man called Joseph Merrick, a Englishman who was born with disfiguring congenital disease in the 19th centenary. A doctor called Fredrick Treves who is fascinated with Joseph’s disease and takes him away from the circus freak show helps Joseph out.

“His motives in introducing the Elephant Man to society are no better than those of the brutish carny.” (VARIETY STAFF. Dec. 31, 1979)

Before Dr. Fredrick  Treves meets John Merrick, John life was being a circus freak and Bytes the guy who was the man what kept john captured for many years for his own profits of showing the world of John’s hideous disfigurement disease. Once Dr.Treves takes John Merrick to his hospital to be looked after but Dr. Treves starts to become like Bytes and starts to show John off to medical experts to gain praise from them, he soon realize what he’s becoming and stops it and asks his wife weather he’s a good man or a bad man.

“It's an amazing story about the human spirit that's told with great sensitivity, as Merrick's humanity clearly comes through despite his hideous deformity.” (DENNIS SCHWARTZ. April 23rd 2007)

The amount of courage John Merricks shows through out the film is truly inspiring to any human being. His courage is shown early on in the film where Dr. Treves asks him to speak and after a few minutes John starts speaking even though he has great trouble speaking he continues to get better at it which also shows he is an intelligent person.  Also when John Is heading back to London by going through the train station even though he has a mask covering his face for a man who looks and walks the way he does to go through such a public place is a very brave move.

Even though John isn’t easy on the eyes, as he spends more and more time with Dr. Treves he meets more elegant people and starts to build confidents and this shown by the way he dresses and speaks.

“In such a setting it's no surprise that a kind of sad, desperate genteelness was once equated with human dignity.” (Vincent Canby. October 3RD, 1980)

the sadness parts what stood out the most were where he started to speak for the first time, when he lived with Bytes at the circus being abused and called horrible names and at the end where he lays down the way he’s not meant to because it will kill him due to his disease, when he does that its like he’s had what he wanted from life after going through all the abuse and misery to enjoying his final weeks and being happy enough to end his life on a high note.

Owl/Human Hybrid (Griffin Figure) Stages

Image 1 is my drawing of a hybrid mainly being over the top with features with four wings the back ones are more like flaps of an airplane to help the hybrid glide while flying, massive claws and extra human arms and human feet. I based this hybrid looks from a griffins figure.

Image 2 is the same as image 1 but this time it was a quick sketch in Photoshop. when i was doing this image i was experimenting with shades and looking at the pose from different angles by flipping the image.

Image 3 was done by Phil in the lesson and he made changes to the image on how he felt it should look like, he said owls have no neck so he gave my hybrid a bigger head and felt the extra human arms were add-ons so he got ride of them and then he spoke about no object has an outline so he worked into getting ride of the outlines by blending them in.

Splice Review

Fig One – Cover of Splice

Fig two – Poster of Splice

 Fig three – Dren

Splice Review

Splice (2009) was directed by Vincenzo Natali and is about two genetic researchers, Clive and Elsa who are also partners who have been success in recombining different animals DNA and now want to take it to the next level with human DNA even though it goes against the corporation rules Clive and Elsa do and they then splice Dren, who is a hybrid of animal and human DNA.

“Dren morphs into a special-effects miracle, sexy and scary in equal doses.”(Peter Travers, June 3RD 2010) The amazing transformation of Dren from being an alien looking fetus out a womb, to becoming a young seductive but scary woman looking creature in a matter of months.

“Clive is understandably creped out at first by his wife's coddling treatment of Dren.”(Nick Pinkerton Tuesday, Jun 1 2010) At first Clive isn’t up for splicing human and animal DNA but goes along with Elsa as they are a close couple but as Dren grows up Clive slowly becomes more and more closer to Dren as she becomes more human looking and starts to have sexual feelings towards Dren whether this is because the human DNA Dren has is Elsa or is Dren’s animal instincts of finding a mate is too much for Clive to resist. The instincts of this is shown  when Dren and Clive are alone in the barn and Dren opens her arms up and lets her wings flutter open as if she’s trying to impress and lure Clive to mate with her.

“Characters come together and splinter apart as they become parents of sorts and their tricky ethical dilemma worsens.”(Eric Melin, June 4 2010) Parenting in Splice is a big factor to Dren and how she acted, as Elsa mum was harsh to her and gave her a bad childhood, this is shown in the film when Dren finds a cat and shows it to Elsa but Elsa takes it away from Dren like Elsa’s mum took dolls away from her when she was little. So Elsa didn’t know how to be a good parent and is most likely why she kept putting off having a baby with Clive instead this maybe the reason she wanted to create Dren to have a go at parenting but not have the risks of an actual child.

The visual effects of Splice are stunning the transformation of Dren, her animal features and instincts, the little creatures at the beginning of the film were well designed and looked real and the sound effects were good as well as the music in film was nicely done to add atmosphere.

The Company Of Wolves Review

The company of wolves is a complexes film Directed by Neil Jordan has multipal stories with in the film. The main protagonist is a young woman called Rosaleen who has long dream, in her dreams she has similar resemblance to little red riding hood. In Rosaleen dreams she lives with her family in a fairy-tale village but one day her sister is killed by a wolves and as this is in Rosaleen dream its clear she doesn’t like her sister that much. After her sister death Rosaleen goes and lives with her grandma while her parents morn for their daughters death. Her grandma warns her of the men who eyebrows meet and not stray from the path.

“What killed the illusion was the over use of master shots and the incredibly harsh and unrealistic lighting”( Jeffrey Macabre. July 19 2011)

The scenery with in the film was well designed and believable through out the film what let the film down for me was lighting effects for this film, the lighting for the film was to unrealistic, a scene inputitcular is where Rosaleen is in her grandma house with a man who’s eyebrows meet, now for this scene I felt the scenery looked believable but the lighting on the scene was to much due to the lights where to bright considering it was in a house at night so the scene should have been quite dark but instead it wasn’t.

most parts of the film Leave you thinking what’s going on. Having said that the way the film is captured and the settings of the scenes were its strongest points for me, this mainly due to most of the film being in the main protagonist dream world which is a cool concept as it’s not a common theme with in films.

“Like the Brothers Grimm, the film makers have attached to the tale of Red Riding Hood a lot of things that would have baffled 18th-century French peasants sitting around the fireside at day's end.” (Vincent Canby. April 19th, 1985)

The film has similarities to the Brothers Grimm film in the way it has ride riding hood story but more stories based around it with the other dreams within a dream scenes. Even though the film Brother Grimm is a more recent film the visuals and effects of both films are similar to each other due to being about fantasy creatures and fairy-tales.

“The most innovative, intelligent, and visually sumptuous horror film of recent years. The most innovative, intelligent, and visually sumptuous horror film of recent years.”( TV Guide's Movie GuideTV. July 30, 2003)

Even though the film was very unrealistic in the sense it was all in Rosaleen dream the props and scenery was believable. The most interesting part of the film was when the man rips of his face slowly and turns into a wolf, then to be instantly killed and his head to land into a cooking pot, where it goes in has a wolves head but remerges as a human head which was a nice touch.

The film doesn’t contain much gore or sexual nature compared to now day’s films, the goriest part of the film has to be where the wife’s husband disappears for ages then returns to find his wife with another man and kids who are not his. Gets angry towards his past wife and starts to transform into a werewolf by ripping of his skin from his face. Slow transforming into a wolf then to be killed by the wife’s husband who happens to walk in and save them just in time.

WereOwl

This is the other direction i was thinking of taken the unit.

i was thinking about Werewolves but my animal is an owl so i thought about doing an WereOwl.

The drawing above is a stage of me changing from human into a WereOwl
probably about the final stage of the transformation.

I was thinking about doing a animation of images of me changing from human to a WereOwl, i thought as the owl isn't the coolest animal going i thought to get the best outcome for a WereOwl would be to take the best features of the human body (mainly muscle) and take the best parts of an owl such as wings, claws and hunting skills.  As the owl doesn't have hands i gave it the feet of an owl but change them into hand-like looking and the hair of a WereOwl to be more pointy to represent the ears of an owl.
