For this design I went for the dark symbiote forming as the cancer on the damaged cell, showing the stages of the damaged cell. 
For the image Left, I was looking to do a mechanical style for the cancer cell development.
These where some early designs of the cells, at the start I was looking to have real bright colours.

lots of different sorts of design language here; just a note of caution; creating really good, highly organic assets is very challenging, so bold stylisation/simplification of organic shapes is often sensible; similarly, that mechanical style is interesting, but you'd have to roll out that visual concept across your whole world in design terms.
